Background Introduction

The railway subgrade is the foundation of the track, and its settlement and horizontal displacement directly affect track smoothness and operational safety.

Subgrade settlement is often caused by weak subgrade conditions, inadequate compaction of fill materials, fluctuations in groundwater levels, and disturbances from adjacent construction activities. These issues are typically difficult to detect in the early stages; as they progress, they can lead to rail distortion and fastener failure, and in severe cases, may result in derailment accidents.

Traditional monitoring relies on manual measurements using leveling instruments, which suffer from low frequency and significant time lags. Therefore, it is necessary to establish an automated, high-precision, non-contact subgrade settlement monitoring and early-warning system to track subgrade deformation in real time and ensure track safety.

Solution Overview

This scheme employs a non-contact monitoring technology based on a visual‑intelligence deformation monitor.

Visual monitoring devices are installed at stable locations outside the subgrade monitoring sections, and passive infrared targets are deployed at the subgrade monitoring points.

The monitoring system periodically captures images of the target using a high-resolution camera and employs sub-pixel localization and AI algorithms to compute the target’s horizontal and vertical displacements relative to the reference target, achieving sub-millimeter accuracy.

Data is uploaded to the cloud platform via 4G or LoRa, and the platform configures thresholds for settlement rate and cumulative displacement; an automatic alert is triggered when these thresholds are exceeded.

The device features a built-in constant-temperature control system that eliminates temperature drift errors and ensures reliable performance in outdoor environments.

The scheme can simultaneously monitor multiple targets, enabling continuous cross-sectional monitoring.
