Xing’an YJ Tailings Dam Automated Safety Monitoring Project

Xing’an YJ Tailings Dam Automated Safety Monitoring Project

Background Introduction
Tailings storage facilities play a crucial role in mining operations, typically serving to store waste materials and tailings generated during the mining process. These wastes may contain valuable mineral resources; therefore, the rational development and management of such facilities can promote the efficient utilization of mineral resources, stimulate the growth of related industries, contribute to the local economy, and create employment opportunities. At the same time, strict control and monitoring are essential to ensure the structural stability and safe operation of tailings storage facilities, thereby reducing the risk of accidents such as collapses and leaks and safeguarding both human safety and environmental integrity.

In 2021, Guilin Spepc Technology undertook the automated safety monitoring project for the YJ tailings pond in Xing’an. By monitoring indicators such as slope deformation, displacement, and cracks of the tailings pond, as well as changes in water pressure, seepage rate, and seepage pressure within the pond, the project aims to prevent dam failure, control waste leakage, and reduce environmental risks, thereby ensuring the stable operation of the tailings pond and minimizing potential environmental impacts.

Monitoring equipment
Conduct all-round dynamic monitoring of the tailings pond using an integrated three-dimensional monitoring system, comprising an integrated tilt monitor, an integrated crack monitor, an integrated rainfall monitor, piezometers, and video surveillance.

Front-end sensors collect data on various monitoring parameters, which are then transmitted via a gateway to the monitoring system for analysis. When the collected data exceeds the preset alarm thresholds, the system automatically triggers an alert, promptly notifying relevant personnel to implement protective measures. This approach achieves a dual-layer protection strategy—combining scientific and technological safeguards with human oversight—thereby comprehensively ensuring the operational safety of the tailings storage facility.
