Xing’an Yinjian Tailings Pond Automated Safety Monitoring Project

Background Introduction
Tailings ponds play a crucial role in mining operations, typically serving to store waste materials and tailings generated during the extraction process. These residues may contain valuable mineral resources; therefore, their rational development and management can facilitate the efficient utilization of mineral resources, stimulate the growth of related industries, contribute to the local economy, and create employment opportunities. At the same time, tailings ponds must be subject to rigorous control and monitoring to ensure structural stability and safe operation, thereby mitigating the risks of collapses, leaks, and other accidents, and safeguarding both human safety and environmental integrity.
In 2021, Spepc Technology undertook an automated safety monitoring project for the Yinjian Tailings Pond in Xing’an. By monitoring slope deformation, displacement, and cracks, as well as changes in water pressure, seepage rate, and seepage pressure within the tailings pond, the project aims to prevent dam failure, control waste leakage, and reduce environmental risks, thereby ensuring the stable operation of the tailings pond and mitigating potential environmental impacts.

Monitoring equipment
Conduct comprehensive, real-time monitoring of tailings ponds using an integrated three-dimensional monitoring approach:
-
Integrated Tilt Monitor
-
Integrated Crack Monitor
-
Integrated Rainfall Monitor
-
Seepage meter
-
Video surveillance
Front-end sensors collect data on various monitoring parameters, which are then transmitted via a gateway to the monitoring system for analysis. Once the collected data exceeds the preset alert thresholds, the system automatically triggers an alarm, prompting relevant personnel to promptly implement protective measures. This approach achieves a dual-layered defense—combining advanced technological safeguards with human oversight—ensuring the operational safety of the tailings pond in all aspects.
