Project Background

Guizhou is located in the southwestern heartland of China, on the eastern edge of the Yunnan–Guizhou Plateau. It is a mountainous province that rises between the Sichuan Basin, the Guangxi hilly basin, and the western Hunan hills, with an area of 176,167 square kilometers. Owing to its unique geological structure, Guizhou features complex natural conditions, a fragile geological environment, and frequent geological hazards, making it one of the quintessential regions for research on mountainous environmental geology in China.

(1) Topographic factors: The slope profile exhibits a stepped, terraced morphology alternating with small ledges, and the presence of platform depressions and cultivated fields on the slope facilitates the storage of surface water. Under these topographic conditions, surface water readily infiltrates the landslide body in a sheet‑like manner, saturating the soil and increasing its unit weight while reducing its compressive strength. This creates lubricating surfaces within the soil layers, triggering shallow soil landslides, or reactivating existing landslides by lubricating bedrock slip surfaces.

(2) The steep slope gradient, combined with villagers’ agricultural activities and human‑induced excavation of residential plots, has created exposed cliff faces, leading to localized collapses. These conditions have provided favorable spatial settings and triggering factors for the development of landslides.

(3) Following atmospheric rainfall, rainwater infiltrates along pre-existing tensile fractures and then flows downslope along the bedding planes at the toe of the slope, eventually discharging. Simultaneously, runoff percolating through the rock mass gradually wets the base of the soil layer, thereby establishing a slip surface at the interface between the Quaternary clay and the underlying bedrock, which can trigger landslide initiation.
