Project Background
Guizhou is located in the southwestern heartland of China, on the eastern edge of the Yunnan–Guizhou Plateau, a mountainous province that rises between the Sichuan Basin, the Guangxi hilly basin, and the Xiangxi hilly region, with a total area of 176,167 square kilometers. Owing to its unique geological structure, Guizhou exhibits complex natural conditions, a fragile geological environment, and a high incidence of geological hazards, making it one of the typical regions for research on mountainous environmental geology in China.

(1) Topographic factors: The slope profile features multiple terrace levels alternating with small steps, along with depressions on the terraces and cultivated land distributed across the slope, all of which facilitate the storage of surface water. Under these topographic conditions, surface water readily infiltrates the landslide mass in a sheet-like manner, saturating the soil and increasing its unit weight while reducing its unconfined compressive strength. This leads to the formation of lubrication surfaces within the soil layer, triggering shallow soil landslides, or to the reactivation of landslides by lubricating the bedrock sliding surface.

(2) The steep slope gradient, combined with villagers’ agricultural cultivation and man-made excavation for residential land, has created exposed cliff faces, leading to localized landslides. These conditions have provided favorable spatial settings and triggering factors for the development of landslides.

(3) Following atmospheric rainfall, rainwater infiltrates along pre-existing tensile fractures and then flows downslope along the bedding planes of the bedrock, eventually discharging at the toe of the slope. Simultaneously, rainfall runoff percolates through the rock mass and gradually saturates the base of the soil cover, thereby forming a slip surface at the interface between the Quaternary clay layer and the underlying bedrock and ultimately triggering landslide initiation.
