Slope Monitoring Along the Railway Line of a Certain Railway Bureau

Project Background
Railways are the lifeline of the national economy, a critical piece of national infrastructure and a mass transportation mode, serving as the backbone of China’s integrated transport system. By the end of 2022, the country’s total railway operating mileage had reached 155,000 kilometers, underscoring the pivotal role railways play in China’s economic and social development.

In 2022, Guilin Spepc Technology undertook the railway geological disaster safety monitoring and early warning project for a certain railway bureau under China State Railway Group, conducting automated monitoring of hazards along the railway lines, such as landslides, debris flows, slope deformations, and falling rocks from dangerous cliffs. Nearly 10,000 units of automated monitoring equipment, including inclinometers, collapse meters, soil moisture sensors, and video surveillance systems, were installed, providing comprehensive coverage of the lines under the jurisdiction of five track maintenance sections within the bureau’s area. This successfully established a full-line monitoring and early warning system for the railway bureau, enabling round-the-clock automated monitoring and management of the safety status along the lines. This project also marks the first large-scale implementation of a railway-side safety monitoring system by the railway bureau!

Monitoring equipment
Conduct all-round dynamic monitoring along the railway line through an integrated three-dimensional monitoring system, comprising: an integrated tilt monitor, an integrated collapse monitor, an integrated crack monitor, an integrated soil moisture monitor, and an integrated rainfall monitor.

The system comprises three layers—data acquisition, data transmission, and data analysis—and includes hardware components such as front-end sensors, LoRa gateways, and wireless data acquisition modules, as well as a railway geological hazard safety monitoring and early-warning software platform. It automatically collects, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, structural data along the railway line—including displacement and deformation, stress and strain—as well as environmental data such as rainfall and soil moisture. Once the collected data at the front end exceeds the preset alarm thresholds, the system automatically triggers an alert, promptly notifying relevant railway authorities to implement protective measures. This dual-layer approach—combining technological safeguards with human oversight—provides all-round protection for operational safety along the railway corridor.

Success Alert
On May 7, 2022, an inclinometer installed on a track within this railway bureau detected a sudden change in monitoring data, triggering a red alert. The station and section management promptly implemented preventive measures: adjusting train schedules on the affected line and immediately dispatching maintenance crews to the site for on-site repairs, thereby effectively ensuring the operational safety of that section.
