Rainfall and Reservoir Water Level Monitoring and Dam Safety Surveillance Project for Tiekouyuan Reservoir

Project Background

Tiekouyuan Reservoir, located in Hunan Province, is a small reservoir primarily designed for irrigation and flood control. Traditional monitoring relies heavily on manual inspections, lacking continuous, automated data on dam deformation, pore‑water pressure, and rainfall conditions. This results in significant safety risks during the flood season, making the establishment of an integrated monitoring system urgently necessary.

Monitoring equipment

The project’s installed equipment is as follows:

Device Type

Quantity

Monitoring Content

GNSS

4 sets

Dam surface displacement (horizontal) +Vertical)

Piezometer

3 sets

Seepage Pressure and Phreatic Line of the Dam Body

Rain gauge

1 set

Rainfall in the reservoir area

Video surveillance

1 set

On-site footage of the reservoir area and the dam

Submersible level transmitter

1 set

Reservoir water level fluctuations

All devices collect data via RTU data concentrators and transmit it wirelessly over 4G to the smart reservoir monitoring and early-warning platform, enabling remote real-time monitoring, data analysis, and alert configuration.

Implementation Effectiveness

Upon completion, the system enables round-the-clock automated monitoring of dam deformation, pore water pressure, water level, rainfall, and on-site video. Management personnel can access real-time monitoring data and historical trend curves through the platform, and the system automatically triggers alerts when monitored values exceed preset thresholds. This project provides precise and reliable data support for the safety assessment, routine maintenance, and flood-season operations of the Tiekouyuan Reservoir.
