Jiangxi Transportation Design Institute Slope Monitoring Project

Project Background

Jiangxi Province is predominantly mountainous and hilly, with numerous high slopes along its highways and significant risks of geological hazards. The Jiangxi Provincial Transportation Design Institute undertakes slope investigation, design, and safety assessment for multiple highways, requiring long-term, continuous deformation and environmental data from typical slopes to validate design parameters and optimize protection measures. Traditional manual measurements struggle to achieve continuous monitoring at multiple points and cross-sections, and data on key triggering factors such as soil moisture content are lacking. In April 2025, the institute initiated the procurement of slope-monitoring equipment, with Guilin Spepc Technology leveraging… Integrated Intelligent Sensing Technology and Low-Power Wireless Monitoring Solution Successfully won the bid.

Monitoring equipment

According to the project requirements, Spepc Technology supplies the following equipment:

  • Integrated Tilt Monitor : 34 sets, deployed at key cross‑sections along various road slopes (at the slope crest, mid‑slope, and potential slip surface), continuously acquire tilt angles and vibration acceleration data in the X, Y, and Z axes (accuracy ±0.05°, resolution 0.001°), enabling the detection of slope‑tilt deformation trends and sudden changes.

  • Integrated Soil Moisture Monitor Three sets of instruments are installed at representative locations along the slope, employing FDR electromagnetic pulse technology to continuously monitor soil volumetric water content with an accuracy of ±2%. These measurements are used to analyze the impact of rainfall infiltration on slope stability and to support landslide early warning.

All equipment adopts Solar-powered + 4G wireless transmission , with a built-in lithium‑ion battery backup and an IP68 protection rating, it is designed to operate in remote, power‑less environments and harsh conditions.

Real-time data ingestion SPEPC Monitoring Cloud Platform The platform supports multi-level threshold alarms, historical data trend analysis, and report export, meeting the design institute’s requirements for professional monitoring data analysis.

Implementation Effectiveness

After the equipment was deployed, automated, continuous monitoring of slope inclination and soil moisture content along multiple road sections was achieved. Designers can remotely access real-time data and historical trends from each monitoring point via the platform, obtaining valuable on-site data linking deformation to moisture levels, thereby providing a quantitative basis for slope stability analysis and optimization of protective measures. Meanwhile, the system supports threshold‑exceedance alarms, enabling timely detection of slope anomalies and assisting highway maintenance authorities in taking preventive actions. This project has validated the suitability of SPEPC monitoring equipment for both research and engineering applications within transportation design institutes, accumulating valuable experience for future similar projects.
