Nanning Track Maintenance Department Tunnel Entrance Micro-Deformation Monitoring Instrument Project

Project Background
Railway tunnel portals are critical junctions in the rail network, and their surrounding slopes are susceptible to deformation, cracking, and even rockfalls due to rainfall, geological creep, and other factors. Conventional manual inspections struggle to detect early-stage micro‑deformations, leaving safety blind spots. To enhance the capability for preventing and controlling safety risks at tunnel portals, the Nanning Track Maintenance Section has launched a micro‑deformation monitoring project, deploying automated monitoring systems at key tunnel entrances.
Monitoring equipment
The project has deployed a total of 920 integrated inclinometers (micro‑deformation monitors) at multiple tunnel portals and key locations along the surrounding slopes. These devices incorporate high‑precision MEMS tilt sensors, enabling real-time acquisition of three‑axis tilt angles, acceleration, and ambient temperature data, while supporting 4G wireless transmission and low‑power operation. All data are seamlessly integrated into the railway‑line geological hazard monitoring and early‑warning platform, facilitating remote equipment status monitoring, trend analysis, and tiered alerting.
Implementation Effectiveness
Upon completion, the system enables continuous monitoring of slope deformations at tunnel portals with precision ranging from micrometers to millimeters. Management personnel can use the platform to view real-time inclination‑angle variation curves and historical data for each monitoring point, and the system automatically issues early warnings when measured values exceed preset thresholds. This project has significantly enhanced the Nanning Track Maintenance Section’s capacity for proactive identification of geological risks at tunnel portals, providing a scientific basis for flood‑control inspections during the rainy season, routine maintenance, and emergency response, thereby effectively ensuring railway operational safety.
